Garden Breaks

We are ideally placed to visit many private and National Trust gardens in the Wessex area. During the garden season you will have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of private gardens, each with their own particular charm and beauty. Whether you are a keen gardener, a rare specimen enthusiast, or simply want to enjoy a relaxing time strolling in some of the regions most magnificent and historic locations.

Why not get out and explore the wonderful countryside and coastline in Wessex? Visit the many selected gardens within easy reach of Wells or why not try one of the smaller National Trust properties. Most of these manor house, cottages and corn mill are let to tenants who invite you to come and explore parts of their homes. Come on your own, with a partner or as a group

STOURHEAD- Wilts off B3092 3mls north west of Mere. Breathtaking 18th century landscape gardens. Lakes, grottoes, statues, follies, classical temples and dainty bridges make up a fantasy landscape. Exotic colour of rhododendrons in late spring. The collection of flowering shrubs is magnificent. Open daily. Tel. 01747841152

HESTERCOMBE HOUSE - Somerset. South of Bishops Lydeard off A358 to Cheddon Fitzpaine. Designed by Sir Edward Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll the gardens are an intricate copy of Elizabethan garden landscaping. Best visited in June and |uly. Sunken formal garden. Recently discovered and restored Georgian pleasure grounds. Set in 40 acres. Open daily 10am-6pm. Tel. 01823413923

FORDE ABBEY - 4mls south east of Chard, Somerset. 30 acre landscape garden to award winning standard. Fine trees and shrubs, kitchen  and   bog  gardens.  With  Asiatic  primulas,  vast  redwood seguoia sempervirens. Open daily 10am-4.30pm. Tel. 01460 221290

LADY FARM - Somerset. On A358 1/2ml from Chelwood, 8 mis south   of   Bristol.   Recently  created   7   acre   garden,   extensively landscaped with water features and unusual prairie and steppe areas of low maintenance. Private parties by appointment. Tel. 01761 490770

LYTES CARY - Somerset. 8mls north of Yeovil off A303 signposted from Podimore roundabout. Small manor house in secluded location with a special charm. Yew topiary, herbaceous borders and spring bulbs in the orchard. Open Apr-Oct Mon/Wed/ Sat 2pm-6pm or dusk if earlier. No tea room.

MAPPERTON MANOR GARDENS - 2mls from Beaminster on B3163. Tudor, |acobean Manor House. Delightful secluded gardens - comprises valley and hillside studded with daffodils. CHIFFCHAFFS- Leave A303 signposted Gillingham, Blandford and Bourton. A 2/3 of an acre cottage garden for all seasons - bulbs, shrub roses, woodland autumn colour. In spring bluebell carpet and summer foaming borders of phlox. 2 acre woodland walks. Evergreens give structure to the garden with impressive series of packed herbaceous borders ensuring colour. BATH BOTANICAL GARDENS Royal Victoria Park. Beautifully laid out on sloping site with a wealth of good plants. Fine magnolias, Japanese maples and cherries. An exceptional dogwood is an eye catcher. Open daily from 9am

HATCH COURT - 4mls south east of Taunton (M5 ]25). The 5 acre garden and 30 acres of parkland wrap around a 1750 Palladian Mansion offering a variety of gardens in one visit including a magnificent walled kitchen garden. Even if your garden is not on such a grand scale, ideas and inspiration abound. With glorious views and a magical setting this garden won the 1995 Historic Garden Restoration Award.
